The absolute majority of cheap cutting plotters have their ills and good plotters are expensive. Naturally, customers are looking for solutions that meet their requirements and cost as little as possible. So where does the problem arise and where is the line of good and bad investment?

         In the case of cheap plotters, beside to the frequent problems with workshop processing, the basic problem is the solution of communication with the computer. The vast majority of manufacturers of cheap plotters use the desired USB interface for communication, although the plotter itself is built as an RS232 device. This solution uses USB converters whose quality, due to the complexity and diversity of the standard of USB technology, is very different. In the better case they are high quality converters (for example from FTDI), but mostly only cheaper solutions are used. The plotter is then logged into the system as a virtual COM port. This solution is considerably unstable. Quite often, communication is interrupted even in the middle of the job, and often only a restart of the device will help. Cutting plotters with converters, even in the best quality, are pulling the shorter end compared to more modern solutions.
